Frequently Asked Questions

What is detox?

Withdrawal from long-term drug and alcohol abuse is often an uncomfortable and unsettling experience and in some cases can be dangerous. Detoxification is a medically supervised process whereby drug therapy is used to wean the patient off of their substance of choice and help them cope with the cravings and the physical discomfort experienced in the initial stages of recovery. Detox usually lasts from 5 to 10 days or longer depending on the nature and severity of their addiction.

Do I qualify for treatment?

Any person male or female over the age of 18 with an alcohol or drug addiction qualifies for treatment, provided they do not have a history of non-addiction related violent behaviour and are not sexual predators or arsonists. In order to benefit from the therapeutic process patients must be reasonably conversant in the English language. Prior to your being accepted as a patient you will be asked to complete a pre-admission questionnaire, and one of our counsellors will discuss your case in detail with you, to determine your eligibility for treatment.

What is included in the cost?

Treatment costs include detoxification, initial medical and psychological assessments, all accommodation, laundry, meals, ground transport, counseling, clinical work and outings. Highland House is a full service clinic; however clients are expected to participate in therapeutic duties and in keeping their own personal areas tidy.

What do I need to enter South Africa?

You must be in possession of a valid passport (expiry date to exceed your intended length of stay by 6 months) patients travelling on a UK passport do not require a visa and can enter South Africa as a visitor for 3 months, should an extension be required our administration personnel, will handle those details for you. Patients arriving on non-UK passports are advised to contact the closest branch of the South African Home Affairs Department for instruction or call our office.

What should I bring with me?

A comprehensive patient orientation pack will be sent or emailed to you upon acceptance as a patient. It will provide you with specific information about what you should and should not bring with you into treatment.

Can I stay in touch with my family and loved ones?

Absolutely! We insist that you do. Family support is an essential part of the recovery process; evidence supports the idea that including the family into the patients’ recovery process is a key factor in establishing and maintaining long term sobriety and clean time.
